Facilitation and biodiversity jointly drive mutualistic networks

چکیده

Facilitation by nurse plants increases understorey diversity and supports ecological communities. In turn, biodiversity shapes networks enhances ecosystem functioning. However, whether how facilitation increased jointly influence community structure functioning remains unclear. We performed a field experiment disentangling the relative contribution of increasing plant in driving pollination interactions. Both presence shrubs pollinator visitation rates. While effects on rates did not interact, were stronger absence than shrubs, meaning that attenuated high buffered low diversity. also found positive complementarity among species as well between at Results indicate negative selection effects, suggesting with generally few pollinators benefit most polyculture while (possibly plant) lots does not. The corresponding changes experimental treatments due to both frequency visits turnover composition. Synthesis. Plant–plant facilitative systems, where diversity, are common stressful environments. Here, we show these systems positively mutualistic interactions via direct indirect Conserving supporting is crucial only for maintaining but functions services.

Plant-Animal Mutualistic Networks: The Architecture of Biodiversity

The mutually beneficial interactions between plants and their animal pollinators and seed dispersers have been paramount in the generation of Earth’s biodiversity. These mutualistic interactions often involve dozens or even hundreds of species that form complex networks of interdependences. Understanding how coevolution proceeds in these highly diversified mutualisms among freeliving species pr...

Nestedness in mutualistic networks

James et al. presented simulations that apparently falsify the analytical result by Bastolla et al., who showed that nested mutualistic interactions decrease interspecific competition and increase biodiversity in model ecosystems. This contradiction, however, mainly stems from the incorrect application of formulas derived for fully connected networks to empirical, sparse networks. Bastolla et a...

Structure of Mutualistic Complex Networks

We consider the structures of six plant-pollinator mutualistic networks. The plants and pollinators are linked by the plant-pollinating relation. We assigned the visiting frequency of pollinators to a plant as a weight of each link. We calculated the cumulative distribution functions of the degree and strength for the networks. We observed a power-law, linear, and stretched exponential dependen...

Why nestedness in mutualistic networks?

We investigate the relationship between the nested organization of mutualistic systems and their robustness against the extinction of species. We establish that a nested pattern of contacts is the best possible one as far as robustness is concerned, but only when the least linked species have the greater probability of becoming extinct. We introduce a coefficient that provides a quantitative me...

Ranking species in mutualistic networks

Understanding the architectural subtleties of ecological networks, believed to confer them enhanced stability and robustness, is a subject of outmost relevance. Mutualistic interactions have been profusely studied and their corresponding bipartite networks, such as plant-pollinator networks, have been reported to exhibit a characteristic "nested" structure. Assessing the importance of any given...
